Philadelphia: So, Starbucks is making some big changes. If you want to chill there or even use the bathroom, you’ll need to buy something first. They announced this new rule recently, saying it’s all about prioritizing paying customers.

The new code of conduct will be posted in all their North American stores. It’s not just about buying coffee, though. They’re also banning things like outside alcohol, smoking, and even panhandling. Basically, they want to create a better vibe for everyone.

A Starbucks spokesperson mentioned that most retailers have similar rules, so they’re just catching up. They want everyone to feel welcome, but they also need to set clear expectations for behavior. If someone breaks the rules, they might be asked to leave, and the store could even call the cops if needed.

This change is a big shift from their open-door policy that started in 2018. That was after a pretty embarrassing incident where two Black men were arrested at a Starbucks in Philadelphia just for sitting there without buying anything. Back then, the company wanted to make sure no one felt unwelcome.

But since then, things have gotten a bit out of hand. Employees and customers have faced some unruly behavior, leading to the closure of several stores due to safety issues. The new rules are part of a plan by the new CEO, Brian Niccol, to boost sales and bring back that cozy coffeehouse feel Starbucks used to have.
