A new report shows SRTA’s fare-free buses have boosted ridership and on-time performance, with public support for the initiative.
Fall River: SRTA has had a fantastic year since it stopped charging fares. A report from the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center shows ridership is up and buses are running on time more often. Most people surveyed are happy with the changes.
The report looked at data since SRTA went fare-free on January 1, 2024. From July to November 2024, ridership jumped by 56.5% compared to the same months in 2023. That’s a big deal, especially when you compare it to other bus systems that still charge fares.
SRTA connects ten cities and towns in the Greater Fall River and New Bedford areas. They’re using state funds from the Fair Share Amendment, also known as the “millionaire’s tax,” to keep rides free until at least June 30.
They first tried a fare-free program during the holiday season in late 2022, and it was a hit. After a successful pilot, they decided to keep it going for a longer period. The ridership numbers are impressive, with over 2.7 million rides in 2024, up from 2.2 million in 2023.
Even the on-demand service for disabled riders has seen a boost, going from about 23,000 rides to nearly 30,000 in just a year. Meanwhile, other nearby transit systems saw only slight increases in ridership.
Another cool thing? Buses are running on time more often. In the first quarter of fiscal 2024, they were on time 87% of the time, and that improved to 90% in the first quarter of 2025. Not having to collect fares means drivers can keep things moving smoothly.
A recent poll showed that even though many people don’t use the buses, 66% support keeping them fare-free. Local senators are pushing for continued funding, emphasizing how important public transit is for residents’ daily lives.
Looking ahead, there’s talk about whether SRTA can keep the free rides going. The report suggests that the costs of collecting fares might not be worth it, especially when you consider all the expenses involved. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!
