Spokane residents can celebrate MLK Day with various events starting Wednesday and running through the weekend, honoring his legacy.

The first event is at Spokane Falls Community College, where the Black Student Union is hosting a celebration and workshop. It’s happening from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Lisa Gardner, the president of the Spokane NAACP, will be the keynote speaker. She’s excited to share insights about MLK Day and the ongoing fight for civil rights.
On Sunday, there’s a special commemoration service at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ. The Black Minister Alliance and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center are teaming up for this event, which starts at 3 p.m. Afterward, the Spokane NAACP invites everyone to a “fireside chat” with Jaime Stacy, a local educator. That talk kicks off at 6 p.m. and will include some snacks.
The big event is on Monday at the Spokane Convention Center. It’s the annual unity rally, march, and resource fair. Community leaders will speak at 10 a.m., and then everyone will march through downtown at 10:45 a.m. After the march, there will be a resource fair and a “teach-in” hosted by Gonzaga University, focusing on how to continue King’s work.
Gardner emphasizes that these events are a chance for the community to reflect on King’s impact and the work that still needs to be done. She believes it’s a yearly reminder to keep pushing for progress and to do better in the future.
