Los Angeles: The wildfires in LA are out of control, and NASA’s satellite images show just how bad it is. One shot from the Sentinel-2 satellite captured a huge plume of gray smoke spreading over the city and reaching the coast.

That smoke is coming from the Palisades Fire, which started on Tuesday and has already burned over 11,000 acres. NASA’s Aqua satellite also caught images of smoke drifting far out into the Pacific Ocean.

Even astronauts on the International Space Station have been snapping photos of the flames lighting up the hills of LA. It’s pretty wild to see it from space!

Since the fires began, they’ve scorched nearly 39,000 acres in Southern California—almost the size of Brooklyn. Firefighters are struggling to keep up, with some fires still raging while others are only partially contained.

Sadly, at least 16 people have lost their lives due to these fires, and around 200,000 folks have had to evacuate their homes. The death toll includes 11 from the Eaton Fire and five from the Palisades Fire, and all of these cases are being looked into as fire-related.

With tens of thousands of residents still under evacuation orders, the situation remains dire as the fires have destroyed over 12,000 structures. It’s a tough time for everyone in the area.
