The Broncos aim to enhance their offensive skill positions this offseason, focusing on finding a key playmaker to elevate their game.
Denver: The Broncos had a pretty solid offensive season in 2024. They ranked 10th in scoring, which is a big deal compared to the past few years. Before Sean Payton came along, the team never finished better than 23rd in scoring after Peyton Manning retired. Payton’s first year saw them at 19th, but this season, they scored 28 or more points in eight games and won all of them. That’s impressive!
There were a lot of factors behind this success. The team played well together, and rookie quarterback Bo Nix had a fantastic debut with 34 total touchdowns. Plus, the offensive line was one of the best in the league. But to keep improving, Payton knows he needs to find a special player, often referred to as a “Joker,” who can create mismatches for defenses.
Payton has mentioned this type of player often, usually a tight end or running back who can really shake things up. The Broncos have tried out a few players in the last couple of years, like Greg Dulcich and Jaleel McLaughlin, but haven’t found the right fit yet. Payton knows how valuable these players can be, recalling his time with stars like Reggie Bush and Alvin Kamara in New Orleans.
He pointed out that top teams often have standout players like Travis Kelce with the Chiefs, who make a huge impact. Unfortunately, the Broncos struggled in both running back and tight end production this past season. Javonte Williams had 859 scrimmage yards, which isn’t great, and the tight ends combined for fewer yards than many individual players at that position.
While the Broncos have other areas to improve, like inside linebacker and safety, finding that key offensive player is a top priority. As they head into the offseason, it’s clear that upgrading their skill talent is essential for competing against teams like Buffalo and Kansas City.
