Shane Hennen was arrested in Las Vegas for his role in a fraudulent sports betting scheme involving NBA player Jontay Porter
Las Vegas: So, Shane Hennen got himself into some serious trouble. He was arrested at the airport for being part of a shady sports betting scheme. This whole thing involves an NBA player who was planning to sit out games.
Hennen was taken into custody at Harry Reid International Airport. Apparently, he was making money off bets related to this NBA player’s performance. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is on this case, and they’re not playing around.
Now, they didn’t name the player in the complaint, but it looks like it’s Jontay Porter, a former Toronto Raptors player. He recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Talk about a mess!
Porter got banned from the NBA after it came out that he was sharing confidential info with bettors and even betting on games himself. Before a game back in March, he let a bettor know about his health status, which is a big no-no.
Hennen wasn’t acting alone. He was part of a group that got tipped off about Porter planning to withdraw from two games. On both occasions, Porter pulled out, claiming health issues, and Hennen and his crew made some smart bets on that.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office, they could have raked in millions using a network of proxies to place their bets. Hennen even bought a one-way ticket to Colombia, but he got nabbed before he could leave.
He was released but has to show up in federal court later. This guy has a history, too. He’s been in trouble before for gambling-related offenses, assault, and drug charges.
Now, he’s facing some serious charges, including wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. If he’s found guilty, he could be looking at 20 years behind bars. Yikes!
