The recent Senate hearing for Pete Hegseth revealed a troubling lack of accountability and serious questions about qualifications.

Washington: Wow, what a mess that Senate hearing was! It kicked off with Pete Hegseth, who’s known for his gig on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” being considered for defense secretary. But honestly, it felt like a total waste of time.
For about four hours, they just danced around the real issues. Hegseth is not exactly the most qualified guy to run a massive department with a huge budget. He doesn’t have the experience needed for such a big role.
Plus, there are serious questions about his character. He’s faced accusations of drinking on the job and even sexual assault, which he denies. But still, when it comes to national security, character should be a big deal.
The hearing was supposed to dig into his qualifications and character, but instead, it turned into a show for the senators. They didn’t seem to care about the important stuff.
Republicans didn’t ask him any tough questions, which is pretty telling. It’s like they were more interested in showing off than actually doing their job. They flattered him instead of challenging him.
One Republican even agreed with a Democrat who said Hegseth wouldn’t get elected as a CEO. That’s a pretty low bar! And then he went on to excuse Hegseth’s past behavior by pointing out that many senators have their own issues.
So, the GOP’s argument seems to be, “Everyone else is a mess, so let’s add another mess to the mix.” It’s wild that they’re claiming it’s the Democrats who are lowering the standards.
On the other side, the Democrats didn’t do much better. They seemed more focused on trying to embarrass Hegseth than actually getting to the heart of the matter. He just dodged their questions like a pro.
While everyone was caught up in discussions about quotas in the military, there were hardly any questions about real policies or what Hegseth knows about the job. Where were the tough questions about international issues?
Even Mark Cuban chimed in, saying the Democrats needed to step up their game. Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger felt the same way, saying the questions were weak and Hegseth got away with too much.
It’s clear the system is broken. Republicans didn’t hold Hegseth accountable, and Democrats missed their chance to challenge him effectively. Hegseth is likely to get confirmed, and it feels like we’re just lowering our standards more and more.
If character and qualifications don’t matter anymore, then what does?
