Wichita: A Sedgwick County detective is in hot water. The sheriff revealed that this detective, who worked on child crime cases, is now the focus of a criminal investigation.

Sheriff Jeff Easter has asked the Wichita Police Department to look into the detective’s actions. It seems there were some serious issues with how cases were handled, including improper closures and not fully investigating complaints from 2019 to 2024.

Back in December, the sheriff’s office started reviewing the detective’s cases. They found enough concerning evidence to alert the police department and activate a special response team to dig deeper into the situation.

The detective, who joined the Internet Crimes Against Children section in 2019 and moved to the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit in 2021, is currently on paid leave while the investigation unfolds.

Once everything is wrapped up, the right authorities will decide if any charges will be brought against him. Meanwhile, other investigators are reaching out to those involved in the cases to ensure everything is thoroughly reviewed.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that these investigators are specially trained to handle sensitive cases. After their review, the findings will be sent to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for further action.

The sheriff declined to comment further, citing the sensitive nature of the investigation. They want to protect the integrity of the process and the privacy of the survivors involved.

The Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit is a collaboration between the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the Wichita Police Department, and the Kansas Department for Children and Families. This partnership has been crucial in protecting children for nearly 40 years, and they remain dedicated to high standards in their investigative practices and care for survivors.
