Las Vegas: Search and rescue teams have called off their efforts for Michael Martin, a pilot who went missing earlier this month. He took off from North Las Vegas Airport, and authorities announced the suspension of the search on Thursday morning.

Scott Lewis, the Nye County Emergency Management Director, mentioned that while the search is paused, the investigation is still active and being handled by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Michael, 65, was a skilled pilot and owned a 1960s Piper plane. He was last seen on January 2. His daughter-in-law, Kathleen, shared that he took off at 10:51 a.m., but his flight transponder stopped working at 11:15 a.m. His phone last pinged near Tonopah at 12:06 p.m., and his iPad and Apple Watch showed him near Mount Jefferson shortly after.

Initially, the family thought he might be taking a short break after a hectic holiday season. However, they reported him missing on January 5 when they couldn’t reach him.

Lewis noted that it seemed Martin didn’t file a flight plan. Investigators searched vast areas from the air and on the ground, even using cadaver dogs, but found no trace of him. They covered regions like the Jefferson Mountain Range and the Yomba Shoshone tribal area.

If anything new comes up, Lewis said they might resume the search.

This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates.
