Saline County Declares State of Disaster, Calls on Community for Help

SALINA: So, over the weekend, Saline County got hit hard with more than a foot of snow. It’s been a real mess, and classes are canceled. They’ve even declared a state of disaster.

Usually, when a storm rolls in, they can count on help from nearby counties. But this time, everyone’s dealing with their own snow issues. Saline is really struggling and needs its residents to step up.

Eddie and Velda Creer, who’ve lived in Salina for over 30 years, said they’ve never seen anything like this. Eddie recalled a blizzard back in ’93 when they had their baby, but Velda thinks this storm is even worse.

They were stuck in their car, buried under all that snow. The Emergency Management team is feeling the pressure too. Director Michelle Weis mentioned they just don’t have enough resources or people to handle it all right now.

With nearly every plow and tow truck busy or out of commission, the situation is tough. Weis said the crews have been working around the clock, but they’re exhausted and cold.

That’s why the county is reaching out to the community for help. They really can’t do it alone. Weis emphasized how important it is for everyone to pitch in.

Melissa McCoy, the Public Information Officer, shared how her neighbor helped her clear her driveway. She encouraged everyone to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly, to make sure they’re okay.

People in Salina are stepping up to help the emergency workers. Eddie mentioned how his neighbor came out with a shovel to help him dig out his van. It’s heartwarming to see the community come together like this.

Finally, the Creers managed to get their car moving and are now looking forward to recovery. Eddie joked that they’d just park it in the driveway and wait for spring.

When a county hits a certain threshold of damage, they can declare a state of disaster. This opens the door for state and federal help, which is crucial for getting back on track.
