Richmond Man Arrested for Impersonating Officer with CHP Decals on Camaro

Richmond: On Wednesday, two police officers in San Rafael noticed a white Chevrolet Camaro with CHP decals. It looked like an old patrol car from years ago.

At first, they thought it was a real CHP vehicle and waved at the driver. But then they realized the driver wasn’t in uniform and didn’t seem like an officer at all.

This happened on Bellam Boulevard near the I-580 overpass. The officers decided to check it out further since the car didn’t have proper CHP plates.

When they pulled the driver over, he admitted to putting the decals on for a car show. He also recognized that it could confuse people.

The officers found out that the Camaro had just been taken out of an impound lot due to expired registration. It likely hadn’t been in any car show.

The driver, 25-year-old Matthew Bennett Connolly from Richmond, was arrested for impersonating a police officer and taken to Marin County Jail. The Camaro was impounded.

The San Rafael Police are still looking into whether there were other incidents involving Connolly or the Camaro before this arrest. If anyone has more info, they should call San Rafael Police at 415-485-3000.
