Richardson: The City of Richardson is stepping up to help folks live healthier lives with the Healthier Texas Community Challenge. This eight-week competition, formerly known as the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge,” is all about earning points for eating right and staying active.

You can rack up points by reporting your healthy meals, drinking enough water, and getting in some exercise. It’s totally free to join, and it runs from January 13 to March 9. If you sign up before it kicks off, you’ll start with 250 points, and you’ll get another 500 points when you log your first health action.

Ashley Wakefield, who manages corporate recreation for Richardson, shared the details with the City Council last December. She mentioned that there will be weekly prizes, and the top communities and school districts will get recognized at the end of the challenge.

To get everyone moving, the city is hosting a walk or run at Huffhines Park on January 25 at 9 a.m. Plus, there are free group classes like yoga, cooking, dance fitness, and functional fitness available at city facilities.

Last year, 362 communities took part in the challenge across Texas, and Richardson residents alone earned 1.3 million points with 185 participants. The parks and facilities saw over 1,000 check-ins thanks to the challenge.

This initiative is backed by Healthier Texas, a nonprofit that aims to unite people and organizations to promote health for everyone. If you want to know more about the Healthier Texas Community Challenge, just click here.
