New York: Rex Ryan really knows how to lift the spirits of Jets fans. After hearing that Mike Vrabel is the new head coach of the Patriots, Ryan had some fun on ESPN’s “NFL Countdown.”

He joked, “Hey, man, hopefully, I get to kick this guy’s ass twice a year. I don’t know,” referring to Vrabel, who was one of the Jets’ top coaching candidates. The other analysts laughed, and host Mike Greenberg, a big Jets fan, clarified that Ryan was talking about the Jets beating the Patriots, not challenging Vrabel to a fight.

Ryan, who coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014, is known for his trash-talking, especially against the Patriots. He has a history with them, going 4-9 during his time as head coach, but he did pull off a memorable playoff upset in 2010.

Vrabel, who played for the Patriots under Bill Belichick, is stepping into a tough situation after the team finished last in the AFC East for two straight seasons. Ryan is clearly hoping for another shot at coaching the Jets, and fans are excited about the possibility.
