Revere City Councilors will consider new measures following the arrest of an undocumented immigrant at a family emergency shelter.
Council President Anthony Cogliandro is pushing for the Revere Police to team up with hotel management to keep an eye on any suspicious activity. Meanwhile, Councilor At-Large Michelle Kelley wants to meet with state officials to talk about how they vet people for these emergency shelters and what can be done to avoid this kind of situation in the future.
One local, Anthony Parziale, who’s running for City Council, thinks the city needs to take a stronger stance. He believes this incident should be a wake-up call for everyone in the North Shore area. He’s all about showing that Revere won’t tolerate illegal immigration anymore.
As for the Mayor, Patrick Keefe, he reassured everyone that public safety is his top priority. He mentioned that they’re keeping tabs on the emergency shelter and that any future safety issues could lead to fines or even a suspension of licenses.
In the meantime, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey noted that Sanchez hadn’t applied for the state’s emergency assistance program and was staying at the shelter with a family that was placed there back in October. The state is now inspecting all emergency shelter units and doing background checks on residents.
