LA residents face uncertainty as wildfires force evacuations and threaten homes

Los Angeles: When Aaron McNeil moved from Maryland to LA three years ago, he thought earthquakes were his biggest worry. He had heard about the occasional fire but never thought much of it. That changed when he had to evacuate his Brentwood home due to a fire in the Palisades.
Now, he’s more concerned about fires than quakes. After evacuating, he and his family stayed at a hotel in Culver City. They could see the smoke from their home, and while he didn’t see the flames, he knew they were close.
On Sunday, he went back to grab some essentials. “We have no idea when they’ll lift the evacuation,” he said. Fires in LA have burned through 40,000 acres, with 24 fatalities reported and 13 people missing. The Palisades fire is only 11% contained, and many areas remain under evacuation orders.
Even with some progress, residents are still on edge. Strong Santa Ana winds are expected, and McNeil hopes they won’t reignite the flames. “We got our fingers crossed,” he said, hoping the situation stays under control.
Meanwhile, police and national guardsmen are directing traffic in Brentwood, where many have already evacuated. Residents are dropping off water and snacks at local fire stations to help those affected.
Barbara and Marc Fishman, who have been without power since Friday, are also preparing. “Our bags are packed,” Barbara said, reflecting on the tough choices of what to take after living in their home for 28 years.
Nancy Zezlarian, who has a view of Sullivan Canyon, tried to return to her home but was turned away. She and her husband left when they saw flames nearby, realizing they needed to get out for their safety.
