The Red Lake Nation has secured a $25 million grant for vital road upgrades to enhance safety and accessibility in Minnesota
Red Lake: Recently, U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith announced that the Red Lake Nation is getting a $25 million grant. This funding is part of a program aimed at making highways safer and more accessible.
The money comes from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Program, which is under the Department of Transportation. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, there’s more funding available for these kinds of projects.
With this grant, Red Lake Nation plans to improve about 1.2 miles of Minnesota State Highway 1. They’ll also fix up four miles of Walking Shield Road and extend it by 5.6 miles. Plus, they’re adding around 11 miles of shared-use paths.
Other upgrades will include wider shoulders, new sidewalks, street lighting, and better access. They’ll also replace culverts, add guardrails, and improve intersections, including a new roundabout. Stormwater and drainage systems will be enhanced too.
The Lower Sioux Indian Community is also receiving a $25 million grant for similar improvements. Klobuchar emphasized the importance of rebuilding infrastructure for families and businesses, especially in tribal communities.
Smith echoed this sentiment, stating that investing in infrastructure is key to connecting people with opportunities across Minnesota. She’s committed to bringing more federal funding to the state.
