Las Vegas: So, there’s this cool new exhibit at the Mob Museum featuring Al Capone artifacts. Diane Capone Pette, his granddaughter, is sharing some family history. She remembers being teased on the playground because of her last name. Kids would point and say, “That’s a Capone.”

Capone, known as “Scarface,” was a big deal in the 1920s with the Chicago Outfit. But Diane says he was more than just a mobster. He was loving and loyal to his family, too. It’s interesting to hear her talk about him as a person, not just a criminal.

The exhibit, called “The First Public Enemy,” opens Wednesday. It features Capone’s favorite weapon, a Colt 1911 pistol, and a home movie he shot in 1929. This is the first time people can see these items up close.

After Capone passed away in 1947, his belongings stayed in the family. Diane and her sisters auctioned some items to keep them safe from wildfires in California. The pistol, which they call his “sweetheart,” is one of their prized possessions.

Geoff Shumacher from the museum says these artifacts are unique. Most of Capone’s items are in private collections, so this is a rare chance to see a piece of history.

The home movie shows a day at Capone’s Miami mansion with friends, including fellow mobsters Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. It’s a glimpse into a different side of his life, away from the crime.

Diane has fond memories of her grandfather. She was just three when he died, but she remembers celebrating their birthdays together. Her last memory is a sweet goodbye, where he told her, “I love you, baby girl.”
