Amsterdam: I never thought I’d be a mom. Growing up in the US, it just wasn’t on my radar. But then I moved to the Netherlands for work and found out I was pregnant. That’s when everything changed.
The Netherlands is known for being one of the best places to raise kids, and now I see why. From the moment my daughter was born, I noticed a totally different vibe around parenting here.
In the US, I always felt like I had to be right there with my mom, constantly supervised. But here, it’s all about giving kids space to explore. It felt weird at first to let my daughter play on her own, but I quickly learned it’s the norm.
At just five months, she was already playing solo and figuring things out for herself. It’s amazing to see her adapt and grow, and it’s helped me relax a lot.
What’s even cooler is how I can balance my career and being a mom. I was back to my business just two months after giving birth, which felt like a dream compared to what I saw back home.
In my neighborhood, other moms are doing the same. There are even coffee shops with play areas for kids, so I can chat with friends while my daughter has fun nearby. It’s a game changer!
Plus, libraries here have programs that encourage kids to be independent and let moms connect. Watching little ones ride their bikes to school without supervision is just part of life here, and it’s so refreshing.
Overall, the community really supports this independence, making it easier for both parents and kids to thrive. I’m loving this new chapter in my life!
