Cumru Township: Exciting changes are happening at the old Titus Generating Station. The new owners have opened a rail transload terminal, which is a big step for the area.

This site used to be a coal power plant but shut down in 2014 due to stricter environmental rules. Now, Titus Clean Industries, which bought the property in 2022, has plans to turn it into a waste-to-steam facility. They aim to convert plastic waste into steam to power a generator.

Joseph D’Ascenzo, the president of Titus Clean Industries, shared that they’ve been working on this project for several years. He believes this site can bring new life to the Reading area.

They’re also looking into other clean energy options, like solar power and anaerobic digestion. D’Ascenzo mentioned they’re in talks with a company interested in building another clean energy power plant on the property.

The rail operations officially restarted in December, thanks to a partnership with Norfolk Southern. This means they can now ship and receive freight again, which is great news for local businesses.

Before this, the rail line was only used to bring in coal, but that stopped when the plant closed. Now, they’re upgrading the rail lines and adding new tracks to help small and medium-sized businesses get their products to market.

The project has also received support from the Department of Transportation’s Rail Freight Assistance Program, which helps fund rail projects that boost freight mobility and create jobs.

Titus Clean Industries envisions turning the site into a hub for clean energy and trade, aiming for Pennsylvania’s first net-zero carbon emissions community. They’ve already caught the attention of several European companies interested in what they’re doing.

D’Ascenzo is optimistic about attracting significant investments, which could create many job opportunities for the local community. While there are no final plans yet, they’re actively working on it.

They’ve had a preliminary review of their waste-to-steam facility proposal and are in the process of working with the U.S. Department of Energy on related applications.

Overall, it’s an exciting time for Cumru Township as they look to revitalize this area with clean energy and new business opportunities.
