San Juan: Puerto Rico’s governor, Jenniffer González-Colón, reached out to President-elect Trump on Monday. She’s ready to team up against Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s threats to invade Puerto Rico.

In her letter, she expressed confidence that Trump would act quickly in response to Maduro’s recent comments. She described Maduro as a “murderous” dictator trying to expand his influence in the region.

González-Colón pointed out that Maduro made his invasion proposal right after an illegitimate swearing-in ceremony. She emphasized that this is a serious threat to U.S. national security.

Maduro’s warning came during a speech at an event in Caracas, where he claimed to have a “liberation agenda” for Puerto Rico, even mentioning Brazilian troops. This was right after he was sworn in for another term, which many view as illegitimate.

U.S. officials have criticized the elections in Venezuela, calling them a sham. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart also condemned Maduro’s threats, labeling them as “absurd and pathetic.”

He praised González-Colón for her strong stance against Maduro and expressed hope for a new foreign policy under Trump that prioritizes freedom and U.S. interests.

González-Colón reminded Trump that Puerto Ricans have been proud American citizens since 1917 and have consistently rejected independence. She sees Maduro’s threats as a way to undermine U.S. presence in the region.

She offered to work with Trump’s administration to counter these threats and support Venezuelans seeking freedom. The Trump transition team hasn’t commented yet.
