Poundland Plans Major Changes in UK Stores After Tough Times for Staff

Wolverhampton: Poundland is stepping up its game after a tough time for its workers. They’re rolling out new security measures to tackle shoplifting, which has cost them over £40 million last year.

To fight back, they’re giving staff body-worn cameras in stores where crime is high. A trial showed these cameras helped reduce violence against staff by 11% and cut down on theft.

With over 800 stores in the UK, Poundland has seen theft and abuse against workers rise sharply in the last 18 months. Their owner, Pepco, noted that stock loss has become a big problem.

Last year, theft and shoplifting losses hit around 52 million euros, a 30% jump over two years. This has come alongside weaker sales, pushing them to lower prices and find cost savings.

Along with bodycams, they’re also adding headsets for quick communication during incidents and working closely with local police to tackle offenders. They’re even hiring more undercover security guards.

Christina Jesty, Poundland’s head of loss prevention, said the rise in theft and abuse has been tough on their staff. She emphasized the need for change to protect both their workers and their prices.

Recent stats show shoplifting in England and Wales has hit a 20-year high, with nearly 470,000 offences recorded in the year up to June 2024. That’s a 29% increase from the previous year, marking the highest annual figure since 2003.
