New York City: A new poll suggests that former Governor Andrew Cuomo would win a Democratic primary for mayor in 2026. Even though he hasn’t officially entered the race, he’s leading the pack.

Cuomo grabbed 32% of the votes, while former city Comptroller Scott Stringer came in second with just 10%. Other candidates like Brad Lander and Jessica Ramos followed closely behind. Current Mayor Eric Adams only managed to secure 6% of the votes, tying with Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.

In a ranked-choice scenario, Cuomo would take the lead in the fifth round with 51% of the vote. Adams, on the other hand, would be eliminated early with only 8%. The poll, conducted by Progressive Democrats of America, ran from December 16 to December 22.

Adams is currently facing federal corruption charges and has low approval ratings. The poll showed that 71% of respondents viewed him negatively. In contrast, Cuomo had a more favorable rating, with 48% of Democrats seeing him positively.

Adams dismissed the poll, reminding everyone that polls don’t determine who becomes mayor. He emphasized that he didn’t have an easy start in life, hinting at Cuomo’s background.

Experts have raised questions about the poll’s accuracy, suggesting it may not reflect the broader Democratic voter base. Some insiders from Adams’ campaign believe he remains the frontrunner, especially as voters learn more about his opponents.

Cuomo resigned in 2021 amid sexual misconduct allegations, which he denies. While he’s not officially running, there’s speculation he might. A former aide mentioned that Cuomo would likely be the front-runner if he decides to enter the race.

Stringer’s campaign also dismissed the poll, arguing that New Yorkers won’t replace one controversial figure with another. They believe Stringer is in a strong position to lead the race.
