SOUTH BEND: So, it looks like vehicle thefts have been a real issue lately. From September to November, the numbers were climbing, but December saw a nice drop. Vehicle larcenies went from 79 in November down to 56 in December, and motor vehicle thefts also fell from 41 to 23.

But even with this good news, the police are still on high alert. Sgt. Jarveair Bourn pointed out that a lot of these thefts are happening downtown, especially on Main and Michigan streets. In December alone, there were 24 vehicle larcenies and four motor vehicle thefts in that area.

Bourn mentioned that these crimes often happen because people leave their cars unlocked or valuables in plain sight. He said, especially during the holiday season, thieves are looking for easy targets. The police are working hard to figure out when these crimes are happening so they can put more resources in those areas.

In other parts of the city, the south region saw a drop in vehicle larcenies too, going from 28 in November to 13 in December. The west side had a similar trend, with 19 vehicle larcenies down from 22. It seems like the police are making some progress, but they know there’s still work to do.
