Norwich: A pizzeria is making waves by charging a whopping $125 for a Hawaiian pizza. They really want to discourage folks from ordering that controversial pineapple topping.

Lupa Pizza, located in Norfolk, has made their feelings about pineapple on pizza crystal clear. They slapped that hefty price tag on their Deliveroo menu, and it’s definitely turning heads.

Their cheeky menu description says, “Yeah, for $125 you can have it. Order the champagne too! Go on you Monster!” It’s all in good fun, but the owner is serious about their dislike for pineapple on pizza.

Head chef Quin Jianoran chimed in, saying he loves a piña colada but would never put pineapple on a pizza. He joked he’d rather use strawberries instead! Co-owner Francis Woolf echoed that sentiment, saying he absolutely loathes pineapple on pizza.

The restaurant, which opened in June, has some creative specials like beef shin rendang and garlic whipped tofu, but pineapple is where they draw the line.

Interestingly, Hawaiian pizza does have its fans. A 2017 poll showed that 53 percent of Brits enjoy the sweet-and-savory combo, while 29 percent think it’s an abomination.

Despite its name, Hawaiian pizza was actually invented in Canada in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant. He was inspired by the sweet and savory flavors of Chinese-American dishes. This was around the time Tiki culture was gaining popularity after Hawaii became a U.S. state in 1959, and canned pineapple was all the rage.
