Washington: So, the Pentagon is gearing up to send around 1,500 active duty troops to the southern border soon. This move is part of President Trump’s plan to tighten immigration controls, which he laid out in his early executive orders.

Acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses was set to sign the deployment orders, but it’s still unclear which specific troops will be sent. The total number might change too. Interestingly, these troops might not be doing law enforcement, which would be a big shift from what we usually see.

Right now, there are about 2,500 National Guard and Reserve forces already stationed at the border, but no active duty troops. The new forces will likely assist border patrol agents with logistics, transportation, and even building barriers, similar to what has happened in the past.

There’s a law that stops active duty troops from doing law enforcement at the border, but Trump has hinted that this could change. He’s asked the new defense and homeland security heads to report back on whether they think the Insurrection Act should be invoked, which would allow troops to take on civilian law enforcement roles.

This deployment is part of Trump’s broader strategy to use the military to manage border issues. He’s been vocal about sealing the borders and stopping illegal immigration, even mentioning a national emergency during his inaugural address.

Back in 2018, Trump also sent active duty troops to the border in response to a migrant caravan. During that time, over 7,000 troops were deployed to Texas, Arizona, and California, but they were mainly there to support border patrol agents without taking on law enforcement duties.

Typically, the Pentagon works closely with the Department of Homeland Security to figure out what’s needed at the border and which troops to send. It’s a coordinated effort to ensure everything runs smoothly.
