Patty Limerick has settled her intellectual property lawsuit against CU Boulder, allowing her access to her scholarly work.
Limerick, known for her work on the American West, said the university’s actions made it tough for her to access her materials. CU Boulder denied these claims but acknowledged her as a tenured professor.
Her attorney, Stan Garnett, highlighted Limerick’s long-standing commitment to the university. The lawsuit stemmed from her belief that CU was using a technicality to restrict her access to her scholarly work.
In a statement, CU Boulder maintained that Limerick was not barred from her work. They expressed support for her future projects, including a program aimed at helping young historians.
Limerick’s issues began after an internal investigation led to her firing, which she said limited her access to her office and documents. She felt the university made it hard for her to transfer her email and access files.
The settlement includes CU paying $50,000 for her attorney fees and allowing her team to access university offices to catalog her materials. Limerick expressed relief and gratitude for the outcome, emphasizing her concern for others in academia who might not have the same resources.
