Erie plans a series of events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. with a parade and an awards dinner recognizing community leaders
This day has been a federal holiday since 1983, thanks to President Ronald Reagan. It honors Dr. King and his incredible work during the Civil Rights Movement, making it the first federal holiday dedicated to African Americans.
In Erie, there are several events lined up for the holiday. If you know of any happening in the area, feel free to email nsorensen@gannett.com or add it to the GoErie.com calendar.
One highlight is the sold-out 14th annual Dr. King Awards Dinner. This event recognizes people who truly embody Dr. King’s spirit and commitment to equality. It’s happening at the MLK Center on January 18 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. This year, Pennsylvania House Majority Appropriations Chairman Jordan A. Harris will be the guest speaker.
On January 20, the annual MLK Day parade kicks off at noon in Perry Square. Participants can start gathering at 11 a.m. The march will head west on West Sixth Street and then north on Chestnut Street, ending at the MLK Center. After the march, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony and a memorial program.
If you have questions, you can reach out to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center at 814-459-2761.
Students, faculty, and staff from Penn State Behrend will also join the march, with a shuttle leaving from the Reed Union Building at 11:15 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m.
On Friday, Penn State Behrend will host a multimedia presentation called “King’s Dream” at noon in Bruno’s Cafe. It will showcase the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement through film, music, and live commentary.
Lastly, Gannon University will screen a documentary titled “Martin Luther King Jr. — The Fight for Civil Rights” on Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waldron Campus Center.
