Manchester: So, there was a big power cut in the city centre on Wednesday night. Over 1,000 properties lost electricity around 7pm, especially along Deansgate.

Electricity North West reported that 1,089 homes and businesses were affected. They said it was due to an unexpected issue with underground cables.

Councillor Pat Karney mentioned that his lights went out at 7pm too. He joked that it felt like living in the outback instead of the heart of the city.

He even shared a photo of the Great Northern Tower, all dark at about 7:45pm.

The good news is that engineers were dispatched, and they expected to have everything back up and running by around 1am on Thursday.

They explained that they didn’t know the power would go out until it happened, but they were on it to restore power safely and quickly.

Several alerts were sent out about the power cuts, affecting different numbers of properties. One alert mentioned 177 homes, another 91, and a third 328. The Deansgate area alone had 327 properties impacted, plus another 166 elsewhere.

Electricity North West is still being contacted for more details on the situation.
