Los Angeles: The Oscars are taking a backseat for a bit. They’ve pushed back the nominations announcement to January 23 because of the wildfires raging in California. It’s a tough time for many, and the Academy is feeling it.

Bill Kramer and Janet Yang from the Academy shared how heartbroken they are over the fires and the losses in the community. They want everyone to know they’re standing strong together during this tough time.

With the fires still burning in the area, the Academy has also extended the voting period for members until Friday. They were supposed to announce nominations earlier that day.

On top of that, the usual nominees luncheon has been canceled. You know, the one where they take those fun “class photos”? Yeah, that’s not happening this year. The Scientific and Technical Awards, which were set for February 18, will be rescheduled too.

In other news, the Writers Guild of America has also decided to hold off on announcing their nominees. They were supposed to do it on January 9, but that got pushed back, and now it’s on hold indefinitely. Their ceremony is still planned for February 15.

As for the Oscars, they’re still on for March 2 at the Dolby Theatre. You can catch it live on ABC starting at 7 p.m. ET, and it’ll also be streaming on Hulu.

This isn’t the first time the Oscars have faced delays. They were postponed in 2021 due to the pandemic and have had other delays in the past, like in 1938 because of flooding and in 1968 after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Even in 1981, they had to push it back just hours before the show because of the shooting of President Reagan. It’s been a wild ride for the Oscars over the years!
