Eugene: The Oregon Department of Transportation is set to make some big changes to Highway 126. They just got a $30 million federal grant to kick off these improvements.

The work will cover a 1.9-mile stretch of the highway, specifically between Huston Road and Lake Side Drive. Construction is expected to start around 2026 or 2027, so there’s a bit of a wait ahead.

This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rural Surface Transportation Program. The upgrades will include adding dual-lane roundabouts at Huston and Ellmaker Roads, plus widening the highway from two to four lanes. They’re also planning to make it safer for walkers and bikers by adding wider shoulders and a separated path.

Veneta Mayor Keith Wiess mentioned that Highway 126 has been a safety issue for over 20 years. He believes these changes will really improve life for the locals.

While they’re still working on the design, there are plans for a left-turn lane at Lakeside Drive, better railroad crossings at Huston Road, and a new transit stop to help with mobility in the area.
