New York City: The oldest FDNY retiree, Anthony Aquaro, passed away at 103. He was known for his bravery, especially during the tragic 1960 plane crash in Brooklyn.
His son shared that Anthony rushed to the wreckage of the mid-air collision, showing incredible courage throughout his life. He served in the Navy during World War II and spent nearly 30 years as a firefighter with Engine Company 269.
“He loved the fire department,” his son said, calling it his second family. Anthony was deeply affected by the 1960 crash, which killed 128 people. He worked tirelessly for three days on rescue and recovery efforts.
Despite his heroics, he was humble and never sought the spotlight. His son described him as the calmest person, always kind and loved by everyone. The fire department celebrated his 100th birthday and continued to honor him in the years that followed.
Anthony is survived by his wife, Gloria, and their children and grandchildren. His son reflected on their close bond, saying he still sought his father’s advice even at 72. Anthony’s legacy of kindness and service will be remembered by all who knew him.
