Mayor Eric Adams expresses interest in meeting Trump and hints at attending the inauguration, aiming for collaboration.
Adams mentioned that his First Deputy Mayor, Maria Torres-Springer, recently met with Trump’s team in D.C. They’re hoping for a face-to-face with the president-elect.
“We’re ready,” he said, emphasizing that this is Trump’s home city. Adams wants to discuss his vision for New York.
Interestingly, Adams’ desire to meet Trump comes after a rocky relationship during Trump’s first term. But after Trump’s recent win, he had a friendly chat with Governor Kathy Hochul about improving the city’s infrastructure.
This could mean a shift in how New York’s leaders interact with Trump this time around. Adams is also looking at how this meeting could help with his own legal troubles. Some insiders think a Trump presidency might actually help his case.
Trump has even hinted at the possibility of pardoning Adams, which is quite the twist! Adams has been cozying up to Trump lately, even meeting with his border czar.
When asked if this could hurt his support from liberal voters, Adams seemed unfazed. He believes his diverse base will still back him.
As for attending the inauguration on January 20, which is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Adams is still figuring it out. He might be in D.C. for MLK events, but he’s keeping his options open.
It’s definitely an interesting time in New York politics!
