The show “Call and Response” blends live jazz with dance, running until January 26 in Calgary’s High Performance Rodeo

“Call and Response” is a creation by Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. It features a live jazz band from New Orleans and talented dancers from Calgary. The show is part of the High Performance Rodeo and runs until January 26.
The band plays tunes that are about 100 years old, featuring three horns, a stand-up bass, guitar, and even a washboard player. The washboard is a unique percussion instrument that’s not often seen around here, but it’s a classic in original jazz. The stand-up bass, however, posed a bit of a challenge for travel.
Kim Cooper, the artistic director and choreographer, shared some behind-the-scenes drama before opening night. They had to order special gut strings for the bass, and there was a bit of a panic when they arrived new and tight. Thankfully, they loosened up just in time.
Julie Shexnayder, the upright bass player, brings a unique style to the performance, inspired by jazz legends like Pops Foster and Chester Zardis.
