City: My daughter wanted a co-ed sleepover for her 16th birthday, and I was a bit hesitant. I mean, it’s a big deal, right? But after some back and forth, I agreed to let the boys stay until 11 p.m. Eventually, I caved in completely.

Honestly, I was worried at first. This wasn’t our first co-ed party, but I wasn’t sure I was ready for this one. I remembered when she was just a toddler, and any affection was just silly little kisses. Now, it felt like a whole new world with teens wanting sleepovers.

She had been asking for weeks, wanting a mix of friends over, mostly girls but a few boys too. I let her go to parties before, but this felt different since it was at our place. I finally agreed to let the boys come for the evening, but they had to leave by 11:00.

The day before the party, we hit up a local party store, and my daughter was buzzing with excitement. We loaded up on balloons and party supplies, then grabbed a cake and snacks. The next day, I was a bundle of nerves as her friends started arriving early.

They bounced around on the trampoline and settled in with snacks and movies. I was relieved it was calmer than last year’s all-girl party. I even invited some mom friends over to help me keep my cool.

As the night went on, I tried to relax with a book, but my daughter caught me off guard. She begged, “Mom, can the guys please stay over? It’s my only 16th birthday!” Little did I know, the boys were working their charm outside.

After a lot of convincing, we finally agreed to let them stay. I set some ground rules, like no girls in the guest room with the boys. But I later found out there was some sneaky making out going on after I went to bed!

In the morning, we were all tired but made it through. Looking back, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I guess when she gets her license and starts driving around, this sleepover will seem like nothing. But I’m not rushing to host another one anytime soon!
