Mitchell: The Mitchell Board of Education is gearing up to talk about a resolution against school vouchers. They’ll meet on Monday, January 13, at L.B. Williams Elementary School at 5:30 p.m.

Superintendent Joe Childs mentioned that several school voucher bills are expected in the 2025 South Dakota legislative session. He believes these bills could hurt public schools if they pass.

The Associated School Boards of South Dakota share this concern. They think it’s crucial for public schools to voice their opposition to any school voucher proposals. Childs has included a resolution for the board to consider.

One of the bills on the table is the Education Savings Account, or House Bill 1020. This proposal from Governor Kristi Noem aims to allocate $4 million for families to use public funds for private schooling, homeschooling, or other educational options.

Critics argue that school vouchers take money away from public schools and lack accountability. They also point out that these programs aren’t available to everyone and show mixed results in student performance.

On the flip side, supporters say these programs give families more choices in their kids’ education and that all families should have access to alternatives, no matter their financial situation.

During the meeting, the board will also look at some personnel changes. They’ll consider hiring Heather Zins as the new high school assistant wrestling coach and several paraeducators at different elementary schools.

There are also some transfers and resignations to discuss, along with new hires at Mitchell Technical College. The board will consider declaring a student-built house as surplus and will enter an executive session to evaluate the superintendent.

They’ll also set the date for the school election and recognize Suzanne Skinner for her excellence in teaching. The meeting will be livestreamed by the Mitchell Republic and is open to the public.
