The Mets are pressing Pete Alonso for a timely decision on a potential deal as spring training nears
New York: The Mets and Pete Alonso are in talks about a deal to keep him in Queens, at least for a few years. But there’s still a gap between what the Mets are offering and what Alonso wants, so they’ve got some work to do as time runs out.
They’re making progress on a proposed three-year deal with an opt-out option, but the financial details are still a sticking point. The Mets have made it clear they need an answer soon to explore other options before spring training kicks off.
It’s not clear if there’s a hard deadline, but the Mets want to avoid missing out on other players while they wait for Alonso. For instance, Anthony Santander is still available and could be a solid backup plan if Alonso doesn’t sign.
They could also use the money to strengthen their bullpen by targeting some good relief pitchers. While both sides seem open to a short-term deal, the big question is whether they can agree on the financials to keep Alonso in Flushing.
With other first basemen already signing elsewhere, Alonso’s situation is getting trickier. Teams like the Giants and Angels are also eyeing him, but the Giants’ park isn’t the best for hitters.
If Alonso leaves, the Mets might shift Mark Vientos to first base and bring in some young talent for third base. They’ve even looked into trading for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but it seems the Jays aren’t keen on that.
