The New York Mets have secured a $5 million deal with 17-year-old shortstop Elian Pena from the Dominican Republic, marking a significant signing.
Pena, who some scouts are calling the next big international free agent, just signed a $5 million deal with the Mets on the first day of the international signing period. This deal takes a big chunk out of the Mets’ $6.2 million bonus pool.
This contract is a record for the franchise, surpassing the previous high of $2.85 million given to Venezuelan catcher Yovanny Rodriguez last year. It’s also the biggest bonus for any Latin player this year and ranks among the largest in MLB history.
Standing at 5-10, Pena is more impressive at the plate than in the field. One scout mentioned that if the Mets couldn’t get Sasaki, Pena is a good consolation prize. They believe he has a lot of offensive potential.
While his glove needs some improvement, scouts are excited about his batting skills. There are early comparisons to Boston’s Rafael Devers, although some doubt he’ll hit as many home runs. Still, scouts agree he has power, plate discipline, and a good understanding of the game, making him a potential threat at the plate.
