Meta is cutting over 3,600 jobs as CEO Mark Zuckerberg aims for higher performance standards amid a focus on AI and smart glasses.
He’s really pushing for better performance, saying they’ll be quicker to let go of low performers. In a memo, he mentioned they usually take a year to manage out underperformers, but now they’ll act faster.
Zuckerberg also talked about the company’s new focus on artificial intelligence and smart glasses. He recently showcased the Orion AR glasses at a conference, which seems to be a big part of their future plans.
This job cut is just the latest in a series of changes at Meta. They’ve recently brought UFC boss Dana White onto their board and scrapped their fact-checking system for user-generated “community notes.”
Zuckerberg hinted that the upcoming elections and a shift in cultural priorities are influencing these decisions. He wants to simplify policies and bring back a focus on free expression.
Employees affected by the layoffs will find out their status by February 10 and will receive severance packages similar to past offerings. This follows a previous round of cuts where Meta let go of about 21,000 workers over the last couple of years.
