Menlo Park: Meta is gearing up to cut about 5% of its workforce this year. Mark Zuckerberg shared this news on Tuesday, aiming to get rid of under-performers.

In a memo to staff, he mentioned that they would be hiring new people to fill the spots of those let go. It seems like a big shake-up is on the way.

Zuckerberg, who has faced criticism for some of his decisions, said he anticipates a tough year ahead. Meta plans to invest more in AI and other important projects.

He’s raising the performance bar at Meta, stating, “I’ve decided to move out low-performers faster.” This means they’ll be making cuts based on performance more quickly than before.

Typically, they manage out employees over a year, but now they’re speeding things up. He assured that impacted workers would receive generous severance packages.

Meta will inform US employees affected by the cuts on February 10, following performance reviews. With around 72,000 employees, this could mean about 3,600 job losses.

A spokesperson confirmed the memo but didn’t provide more details. This isn’t the first time Meta has made cuts; they previously laid off thousands in 2023 as part of a “year of efficiency.”

These latest cuts are part of ongoing changes at Meta, which has been happening for weeks. They recently decided to end their DEI initiatives and appointed a Republican as their top policy executive.

In a recent podcast, Zuckerberg mentioned that parts of corporate America have become “culturally neutered” and called for more “masculine energy” in the workplace.
