Rep. Nicole Malliotakis calls on Democrats to join Republicans in addressing New York’s SALT deduction issues amid high taxes.

Malliotakis, who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, met with Trump to discuss SALT and other tax issues. She believes Democrats should support relief for middle-class families.
She pointed out that New York’s mayor and governor keep raising taxes, making life tough for residents. Malliotakis thinks the governor could lower income tax rates, just like Trump did federally.
Back in 2017, the SALT deduction was capped at $10,000, which hit blue state residents hard. Now, lawmakers are considering raising that cap to between $20,000 and $100,000.
Malliotakis wants the final number to adjust with inflation. She also mentioned tightening the deduction rules to focus on primary residences.
However, some House Republicans are hesitant to help blue states, worried about the deficit. They discussed potential offsets like tariffs and tax credit reforms during their meeting.
Many House Democrats are hoping for GOP support on this issue. They had previously pushed for SALT reform in the Build Back Better package, but it didn’t make the final cut.
So far, no Democrats have agreed to back the tax reform package, which includes extending relief from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. One Democrat even asked to join the discussions at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump is also looking to tie tax reform to other issues like border security. Malliotakis and others hope to eliminate the congestion tax in Manhattan, which started recently.
