The I-43 construction between Glendale and Grafton will finish by summer 2025, impacting thousands of daily commuters.

Glendale: The I-43 construction project is a big deal for local drivers. It’s a 14-mile stretch from Glendale to Grafton, and it’s been going on since 2021. The good news? It’s set to wrap up by the end of summer 2025.
This project is all about making I-43 better. They’re expanding it from four to six lanes, fixing up five interchanges, and even adding a new one at Highland Road. Plus, they’re replacing a railroad bridge in Glendale and widening Port Washington Road.
WisDOT says this freeway is over 50 years old and has seen better days. It’s busy too, with over 53,000 vehicles using it daily south of Highway 60 and more than 96,000 north of Silver Spring Drive. And those numbers are only expected to grow.
As for what’s happening in 2025, there will still be some construction going on. The south end and Mequon Road segments will be active, but they’re aiming to keep three lanes open during peak times. Just be aware that some ramps will be closed until late spring 2025.
For instance, the southbound ramps at Mequon Road will be closed, and there are detours in place. If you’re heading south, you’ll need to take a different route to get back on I-43.
Also, there’s another project happening between Brown Street and Capitol Drive that should finish up around the same time. Expect some lane closures there too, but it’s all part of the plan to improve traffic flow.
Once these big projects are done, there will be a smaller resurfacing job between Oak Leaf Trail and Bender Road. Details are still being worked out, but WisDOT will keep everyone updated.
So, if you’re driving in the area, just keep an eye out for changes and plan your routes accordingly. It’s a bit of a hassle now, but it’ll be worth it when everything’s finished!
