Avelo Airlines is cutting three routes from Bradley International Airport, citing unmet expectations just two months after launching service.
Hartford: Avelo Airlines, which has been quickly expanding in Connecticut, is now canceling three nonstop routes from Bradley International Airport. This comes just two months after they kicked off service there.
They’ve already stopped flights to Lakeland, Florida, and Houston, Texas, and will also suspend service to Charlotte, North Carolina, by the end of March.
Avelo’s spokesman, James Olson, mentioned that these routes didn’t meet their expectations. He added that their main focus at Bradley would be on international flights since Tweed New Haven Airport lacks customs facilities.
Avelo started flying from Tweed back in November 2021 and announced plans for Bradley last summer, with their first flights taking off on November 7.
Even with these cancellations, Avelo will keep serving the three routes from Tweed. They’ll also continue with five nonstop destinations from Bradley, including Daytona Beach, Wilmington, Cancun, Montego Bay, and Punta Cana, with the Dominican Republic route set to launch in February.
The Connecticut Airport Authority, which manages Bradley, didn’t have an immediate comment on the situation.
Avelo and Breeze Airways have been rapidly expanding to attract budget travelers in Connecticut. Breeze set up a hub at Bradley in 2021 and added Tweed in December.
Now, Avelo operates 37 routes from Connecticut and claims to offer more nonstop destinations than any other airline in the state. They also achieved the top ranking in on-time performance this year, boasting the lowest cancellation rate in the industry.
