The recent wildfires in Altadena have claimed lives, with victims identified as families fought to save their homes
Some victims stayed behind to protect their properties. For instance, Anthony Mitchell, a 68-year-old amputee, and his son Justin were waiting for help when the fire closed in. Tragically, they didn’t make it out.
Hajime White, Anthony’s daughter, shared that her father was found next to Justin’s bed. He was determined not to leave his son behind.
Victor Shaw, 66, also chose to stay and fight the flames. Sadly, he was found the next day with a garden hose in hand, a testament to his bravery.
Rodney Nickerson, 82, thought he could ride out the fire at home. His daughter, Kimiko, said he had weathered many fires before and believed this one would pass.
Erliene Kelley, 83, refused to evacuate, thinking previous fires wouldn’t reach her home. Her family tried to convince her, but she insisted on staying.
When they checked the next day, all that remained was rubble, and they learned she had perished. The loss is heartbreaking for the community.
