San Francisco: I taught preschool for two years and really loved it. But honestly, I just couldn’t make ends meet as a single mom. So, I decided to jump into the corporate world. It was a big change, and I had to adjust to interacting with adults again.

The job hunt was tough. I spent hours sending out résumés, hoping to find something that would pay the bills. After three months, I landed an entry-level marketing job at an online health publisher. That’s when the real culture shock hit me.

Going from a cozy preschool environment to the fast-paced world of startups was overwhelming. My son was at daycare longer, and I was spending a chunk of my paycheck on childcare. I often wondered if I had made the right choice, giving up something I loved for a paycheck. But I kept telling myself to hang in there.

Once I got used to my new job, I found some perks. For the first time, I had solid benefits and got to work with people my age. It felt good to be around adults again, even if I felt a bit out of place in my new work attire.

I missed teaching and the time I spent with my son, though. Sure, the office had fun perks like cold brew and happy hours, but nothing compared to the joy of watching kids grow and the appreciation from parents.

Still, I wouldn’t change my decision. Now, I work from home, homeschool my son, and have more time for family and my community. I even dream about going back to teaching someday, maybe while freelancing. I don’t regret taking the leap, even if I miss the kids a lot.
