Norman: Residents are invited to a Mayoral Forum on January 13 at 6 p.m. It’ll be held in the Norman City Council Chambers at 210 W. Gray Street.

This event is a great chance for folks to ask questions directly to the candidates. The League of Women Voters is hosting it to help everyone get informed before the February 11 election.

Sandy Bahan from the voter service committee said, “It’s informational. We believe every voter has a right to participate.” She wants everyone to make informed choices, which is why they sponsor these forums.

The candidates include Larry Heikkila, the current mayor, who focuses on business growth and quality of life. Then there’s Stephen Holman, a city council member since 2013, who prioritizes financial stability and environmental protection. Lastly, Riley Mulinix, a lawyer, aims to improve public health and safety.

During the forum, audience members can write questions on cards. They can direct questions to specific candidates, but everyone will get a chance to respond. Each candidate will have one minute to answer.

Bahan emphasized that these forums create a safe space for community members to engage with candidates about important issues.

More forums are on the way, including one for City Council on January 27 and another for the school board, which will be announced soon.

The League of Women Voters has been around since 1920, originally formed to expand voting access. Today, they continue to advocate for voter participation and education.

In a world of quick social media updates, the League still values in-person discussions, just like they did back in the day. Bahan noted, “It’s an effort to inform the community and give them a chance to talk to the candidates about issues that matter.”

Another debate is set for January 30, sponsored by several local organizations, at the University of Oklahoma. It starts at 5:45 p.m. and is free to attend, but RSVPs are requested for seating.
