A Las Vegas man received a prison sentence for attempting to kill puppies found in a dumpster

Las Vegas: A 39-year-old guy named Micheal Grindrod was sentenced to prison for trying to kill some puppies last November. He initially faced five serious charges but ended up pleading guilty to one count of animal cruelty.
During the hearing, his lawyer asked the judge to let him avoid prison and instead get mental health treatment. But the judge, Susan Johnson, decided to send him to prison for 12 to 30 months. She expressed sadness over the case.
Grindrod will get credit for the 71 days he’s already spent in custody and is recommended to join a drug treatment program while in prison. He was arrested after police found five puppies in a dumpster, covered in a bleach-like substance.
Grindrod claimed he had planned to give the puppies away, but when that didn’t work out, he put them in a garbage bag and sprayed them with bleach and cleaning chemicals. He had been evicted from his job at the apartment complex where this happened.
In court, he admitted to using alcohol and cocaine and said he made a poor choice in a moment of desperation. His lawyer mentioned that he suffers from PTSD from a past workplace injury, which led him to substance use.
One of the puppies, unfortunately, died after the incident, but others were re-homed. The prosecutor argued that Grindrod made a calculated decision, waiting until his kids were asleep to act. She pointed out that there were better options available for the puppies.
