LAMBERTVILLE: The bridge over the Delaware River connecting Lambertville and New Hope is shutting down for two weeks, starting at 6 a.m. on January 13. This means no cars or pedestrians can cross until January 27.

If you’re heading to New Jersey, you’ll need to take a detour about a mile north to the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge, which is free for New Jersey-bound traffic. For those going to Pennsylvania, you have a few choices. The closest option is the New Hope-Lambertville Toll Bridge, which charges a toll only for Pennsylvania-bound traffic. It’s $1.50 with E-ZPass or $3 if you get billed by license plate. Cash isn’t accepted anymore.

If you want to avoid tolls, you can use the Stockton Bridge, about three miles north, or the Washington Crossing Bridge, which is about seven miles south.

To help out while the bridge is closed, there’s a free shuttle service running between Lambertville and New Hope. It’s mainly for people who want to walk across the bridge. The shuttle will run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights. A trip between the two towns takes about 12 to 15 minutes.

The shuttle stops are in convenient spots: in New Hope, it’s near the park benches by PNC Bank and Starbucks, and in Lambertville, it’s close to the old railroad crossing near the Princeton Bank building.

The bridge needs repairs because a critical steel pin has rusted and could fail under heavy loads. This is a big deal since it’s the first time this kind of repair is being done on this bridge, and it’s also a first for any of the Commission’s bridges.
