Maria Shriver criticizes LA’s leadership as wildfires devastate the region
Shriver tweeted that the city must focus on the safety of its people, including police, fire services, and schools. She feels that residents deserve much better than what they’re getting right now.
Her comments came after LA fire chief Kristin Crowley criticized Mayor Karen Bass for leaving the fire department short-staffed and underfunded during this crisis. Shriver echoed Crowley’s concerns, saying LA can’t sustain itself without more support.
With wildfires raging, Shriver urged Angelenos to make their voices heard at the polls. She pointed out that the last mayoral race offered a clear choice, and now it’s up to residents to decide what matters most to them.
The wildfires have been devastating, claiming at least 24 lives and destroying around 12,000 structures. The Santa Ana winds have fueled these fast-moving fires, affecting areas all around Los Angeles, including Shriver’s own neighborhood.
She shared heartbreaking footage of the destruction on Instagram, noting that many in her community have lost everything. While she and her family are safe, the impact on their friends and neighbors is profound.
As the winds are expected to pick up again, Shriver emphasized the need to control the fires and support firefighters and affected residents. Once that’s done, she believes it’s time to rethink the city’s future.
Shriver, who is related to John F. Kennedy, switched from being a Democrat to an independent in 2011. She’s not alone in her criticism; many celebrities are also voicing their discontent with Mayor Bass’s response to the wildfires.
