The Knicks face challenges in the trade market after Nick Richards was traded to the Suns, complicating their center situation.

Richards was expected to step up for the Suns, especially since the Knicks have been struggling at the center position. He had a solid season with the Hornets, averaging 11.3 points and 10.2 rebounds in nine starts. His efficiency would have been a great addition to the Knicks, who are dealing with injuries to Mitchell Robinson and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Towns is out with a thumb sprain, which he aggravated during a recent game. With him sidelined, the Knicks had to rely on Jericho Sims and rookie Ariel Hukporti, which isn’t ideal for a team aiming for the playoffs.
The trade between the Hornets and Suns worked because Charlotte could take on more salary, a rare move under the league’s new financial rules. The Knicks, however, are in a tight spot. They can’t take back more salary than they send out and don’t have tradable first-round picks. But they do have a stash of second-round picks that could help them make a deal.
While Towns’ injury isn’t serious, Robinson’s history of injuries raises concerns. If he gets hurt again, the Knicks could be in trouble. Trade rumors are swirling around both Robinson and Achiuwa, especially with the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaching.
The Knicks also need to address their wing depth. Their current three-guard rotation is undersized, making them vulnerable against bigger teams. If the Suns can pull off a trade without first-round picks, the Knicks can too. They have time and resources to make a move, but they need to act soon.
