Chicago: So, Monday morning was a bit brighter for commuters. The Kennedy Expressway’s express lanes are back in action! The Illinois Department of Transportation announced they’d be open by 5 a.m. Monday.

But hold on, it’s not all smooth sailing just yet. IDOT mentioned that there will be some temporary lane closures in the coming weeks to wrap up some work.

This whole project kicked off last March as part of a big, multi-year rebuild of the expressway. Originally, they planned to have the lanes back by late fall 2024, but that got pushed back, according to Block Club.

They’ve been working on replacing the gate system that lets the lanes switch directions for traffic. This is just the second phase of a three-part, $150 million project for the Kennedy.

Fun fact: the Kennedy Expressway opened back in November 1960 and hasn’t had a major update since 1994! IDOT says over 275,000 drivers use it every day.

So, while it’s great to have the express lanes back, don’t get too comfy. Outbound lane work is set to start this spring, and more lane and ramp closures are coming, according to IDOT.
